The Backbone One holds onto your phone and connects to it over the Lightning port or USB-C to deliver lower latency than you’ll get from Bluetooth connections. However, Backbone Labs released a special adapter for the iPhone 13/14 Pro Max that you can 3D print at home or get as a free extra. Most iPhones fit perfectly, and now an Andriod model is available, meaning you get extensive support no matter the platform. This controller serves as an expandable, flexible dock for your device by locking controls on each side while freeing up the screen to see clearly for a more enjoyable gaming experience and a comfortable hold. The Backbone One mobile gaming controller lets you turn your phone into a handy portable gaming console. Overall a good product.28 See on Backbone Phone support: Android, iOS | Connectivity: USB-C, Lightning | Phone Mount: Yes | Weight: 0.30 pounds I still think it was worth it, despite the small annoyances. As i said earlier, the phone doesn't fit very snuggly, at least for my type of phone it didn't, and when i tested it with actual gameplay there were a few times when i kept noticing that the backbone was flexing away from the phone - it didn't ruin the gameplay experience but now and then i would notice it and it would slightly annoy me. Slightly unusual for me holding something so wide compared to a regular controller (especially since the phone im using is very wide).Īlso the R1/L1 buttons felt a bit too thin and small for my fingers no complaints about the R2/L2. Works well and is as responsive as the Xbox controller that i previously used. Gave it a test run with a few games (Microsoft Flight simulator/Resident Evil Village/Mortal Kombat 3/Bioshock) as well as some Emulators. Overall, happy with the purchase looks nice, feels 'somewhat' nice wish it was a more secure snug fit than it currently is (experience may vary depending on the phone), and hope quality control tested it to work for at least a year. Will share back any comments if anything stands out during gameplay. I only tried it with my Shadow Cloud app for a moment to see if it recognized the controller, which it did. Hope they last for years with repeated use, but i can't help but feel like the quality of the inside doesn't completely match the premium look of the outside. Clicky, plastic-type sounds from the buttons and a spring type sound from the analog sticks. Cant use with covers: Or in my case with the Flip4 i could keep the top half cover on but had to remove the bottom half which connect to the USBC port as mentioned above. This gave my phone slightly more bulk and grip and felt more secure with less sliding/wobbling. The only workaround for me is since the Flip4 covers are split into two (one cover for top half and 2nd for bottom half) so i kept the top half of the cover on and removed only the bottom half (the USBC side). If your phone is a bit thicker then this shouldn't be a problem. It won't be an issue for most games but if you move it aggressively then it will start sliding. The bottom part of the phone which connects to the USBC is secure enough (anchored by the USBC port itself), but the top of the phone very easily slides without a lot of effort. Definetly not a snug fit at least that's my experience with the Flip4. Not sure if i will actively use it or not but i can certainly appreciate the work and effort that's gone into it. Backbone App looks nice and has a great user interface. One touch button for screenshots & screen recording is great Space between the back of the phone and the backbone brace is enough to allow air ciculation so phone doesn't run so warm. Pass through charging using the USB-C port makes it easier to game without worrying about battery drain. Personally i don't like using wireless headphones and i hate that phones no longer have the aux anymore. Really looks more refined and minimalistic compared to the Kishi or other controllers on the market. Not Xbox or PS5 level of premium but more than good enough.
